People we trying to race since the start of mankind. From our own legs, to animals, to now machinery, we have always been searching for speed. As soon as the gas motor was created, and the world's first cars started to roll off the line, people began theorizing about how to make them as fast as possible, and as they technology grew better, the speeds grew faster. Grand Prix races stretch back all the way to the 1930s, and eventually there was a yearly tournament made with a series of these races put into a dedicated schedule; the Formula One World Championship. This tradition is still carried on to this day.
